The Community Foundation is helping families in Lancaster County weather the recession by investing $500,000 where it is critically needed. The Family Aid initiative targets hard-working families affected by the recession in order to keep them in their homes and food on their tables. Through Family Aid, we will partner with area nonprofit organizations to provide immediate assistance to families who suddenly find themselves in a tough situation because of job loss. Many are accessing food and shelter services for the very first time in their lives. Due to the escalating nature of the economic crisis, we saw a need to respond quickly and in a targeted fashion. “A growing number of families are struggling to provide the basics for their children. We want to make sure that our neighbors are getting the help they need to bridge the gap until they can get on their feet again,” said Sam Bressi, President & CEO of the Community Foundation. Through $250,000 of Community Foundation funding, over 6,000 families will receive access to expanded services. Through access to rental assistance and microloans, up to 175 families will be able to stay in their homes for an additional 60 days, 2,000 families will have access to extended hours at food and clothing banks, and one night stays will be available for 4,000 families in need of transitional housing. In anticipation of the expanding impact of the recession, an additional $250,000 in funding is being made available to nonprofits through a competitive grants process to address emergent community needs.

The Family Aid initiative is one example of how the we are responding to evolving circumstances within the county in order to help create a stronger, more stable community.
